Tony Kanaan Wins Pole For SunTrust Indy Challenge
Tony Kanaan celebrates his pole award for the SunTrust Indy Challenge. |
Andretti Green Racing teammates worked together Friday evening resulting in Tony Kanaan and Marco Andretti locking up the front row for tomorrow's SunTrust Indy Challenge IndyCar Series race at Richmond International Raceway. Kanaan won the pole award over Andretti by a mere 0.0309sec on their 4-lap qualifying runs and will lead the field to green tomorrow night “under the lights” at America’s Premier Short Track. "This was a team effort," said Kanaan. "I think I got the advantage of going last of my teammates. I got a read on their cars. We made an adjustment (more front wing) right before I went out according to Marco's feedback." Kanaan took advantage of running at the end of the qualifying session. By the time he took to the track, the entire racing line was in the shade. Andretti was happy that his teammate was the one who beat him. "I'm happy for Andretti Green Racing,” Andretti said. “We just need to keep working. Sure I'm a bit bummed, especially how close it was. But if you're going to get beat, it's good not only to get beat by a teammate, but a good friend as well. It better have been him if somebody was going to beat me." Graham Rahal will start from the inside of row two, next to IndyCar Series point leader Scott Dixon. Fifth on the grid is Buddy Rice, who had the fastest car in practice earlier Friday afternoon. Rounding out the top 10 are Dan Wheldon, rookie Hideki Mutoh, A.J. Foyt IV, Bruno Junqueira and Oriol Servia. Ryan Hunter-Reay, who had been one of the fastest cars in practice, was unable to make a qualifying run because of an electrical failure on his machine and will start 25th. It should make for an exciting race tomorrow as quite a few fast cars were relegated to poor starting positions due to the hot track conditions early in the qualifying session. Amoung these are Helio Castroneves (starting 18th), Danica Patrick (starting 14th) and Ryan Briscoe (starting 11th).
