Bobby East Dominates Sprint Car Race at Richmond
Brownsburg, Indiana native Bobby East led the LUCAS OIL USAC National Sprint Car Series race from flag to flag in a 30 lap shootout at Richmond International Raceway. "They could hang with me for a couple laps but after that I could just pull away," said East after the race. Though it looked easy, East commented, "We tried tightening the car up a little because we were running in the day instead of at night. I know the car could have been a lot better." The race, originally scheduled for Friday evening, was run under sunny skies on Saturday. Mike Murgoitio finished in second place, while Darren Hagen rounded out the top three. While East seemed to lead the race with ease, there was plenty of action behind him. Ron Gregory used his inside second row starting position to move ahead of second qualifier Darren Hagen. Just as Gregory began to make up some ground on the leader, his motor blew up in a big way on lap 8 going down the front straight. He also laid down a coating of oil in turns one and two that almost ended up altering the outcome of the race. When the race went green after the clean up, East almost lost control the first time around that end of the racetrack. "I didn't realize there was so much oil in turn two, and I didn't get a good exit off of two," said East afterward. On lap 10, Murgoitio, took advantage of a slip up by Bryan Clauson, in what was not a very slippery turn one, to move into third place. Lap 15 saw Brady Short park his broken machine at the exit to turn two, bringing out another caution. When the field took the green flag again, Cameron Dodson was pushed into a lazy spin in turn 3, slowing the field yet again. The final lap 15 restart saw Murgoitio slip up in turn one, allowing Clauson to jump ahead. Behind them, Billy Wease and Bryan Tyler battled over 5th place, with Wease securing the spot to the finish. Murgoitio was able to take the third position away from Clauson on lap 19 going into turn three. He set right off after Hagen, closing the gap quickly, and taking second just three laps later going into turn one. Over the next 8 laps, Murgoitio closed the gap to East, closing to within 0.265 seconds at the end. The victory by Bobby East was sweet redemption after he had a victory taken away from him in 2005 at this track. "My car was 7 pounds underweight and I lost all my water in victory lane which was about 14 pounds. That was a tough night for us and I definitely didn't want to give back the check either," said a relieved East.
