Brian Tyler wins Silver Crown Series race
Brian Tyler won tonight's Silver Crown Championship Series event at Richmond International Raceway. He finished 1.934 seconds ahead of Jerry Coons Jr.. Rounding out the top 5 were Bobby East, front row starter A.J. Fike and pole-sitter Pablo Donoso.
"I got about a 6 length lead and then I tried to maintain that gap," said Tyler. He continued, "I think I still had some in hand if someone came up to challenge me."
Said second place finisher Jerry Coons Jr., "I just didn't have enough to get Brian." Bobby East commented, "We didn't have the rear grip we were looking for and my front end pushed a lot."
Pablo Donoso brought the field to the green flag, only to spin his tires under acceleration and drop down to 5th place by the end of lap one. On lap two, Mike Murgoitio spun his machine in turn one, hitting the SAFER Barrier.
Brian Tyler made a strong move around the outside of A.J. Fike in turn 4 to take the lead on lap 8 and would never be threatened for the rest of the evening.
On lap 22, Cameron Dodson suffered a flat left rear tire. Unfortunately for him, this dropped him from contention. Once he returned to the race, he would be able to run faster than the leaders, mixing it up with them for the rest of the evening.
Lap 24 saw the caution fly when Tim Barber's machine lost his brakes and he rolled to a stop on the track. When the race went green again, Bud Kaeding tried to make a move on the inside of Bobby East going through turns one and two. The resulting contact cut the right front tire of Kaeding's mount.
On lap 40, Bobby East, who won the USAC Sprint Car Series race earlier in the day continued his march to the front when he passed Donoso coming out of turn 4.
Lap 54 nearly saw a caution when Marc Jessup and Wayne Reutimann made contact in turn 4. Both cars had lurid slides, but both drivers did a great job saving their cars.
While Tyler was seemingly on cruise control at the front, Fike and Coons, Jr. battled for position on lap 65. Coons, Jr. would eventually win out and pull away. It was another 20 laps before Fike would come under attack again, this time being passed by Bobby East for third.
As Tyler ran to the checkered flag, Coons Jr. made a valiant effort to run Tyler down. He just ran out of laps.
The average speed for the race was 99.447mph
