NASCAR Superstar Kyle Busch set to compete in Inaugural Race at Southside Speedway to benefit The Denny Hamlin Foundation
On May 1st, 2008, Southside Speedway will welcome home NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver and Chesterfield native Denny Hamlin, as well as host NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standout Kyle Busch, Hamlin's teammate. Hamlin will be returning to the .333-mile track where he started his stock car racing career to launch The Denny Hamlin Foundation. At only 22 years of age, Busch, along with Hamlin, are bona fide contenders to win the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship. Kyle is a former NASCAR rookie of the year and has qualified for the Chase for the Championship—NASCAR's prestigious version of the playoffs—two out of three years since joining the Cup Series. This charity event marks the first fundraiser for the Denny Hamlin Foundation, a newly created charity that Hamlin formed to aid in raising awareness and funding for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation ("CFF") and other children's charities. CFF awareness is top of mind to the hometown hero; his cousin suffers from the disease. "I am really looking forward to battling Denny and a field of some of the best short track racers in the southeast at Southside," said Busch. "Denny is a lot of fun to have as a teammate and I am really honored to be able to support the launch of his foundation by participating in the Denny Hamlin 175. Even though the proceeds from the race will support some great charities, I'm definitely showing up to win." Tickets, to what is expected to be a sold out show, are on sale now. Adult, seniors and military tickets are $20 each and tickets for children 7-12 years old are $10, children 7 and under are free. If available, race day ticket sales will begin at 3:00 p.m. on May 1. For more information, visit www.southside-speedway.com. All sales are cash only and there will be no refunds. In the event that the races are cancelled due to weather or any other unforeseen circumstances, tickets will be good for any 2008 racing event at the speedway. About the Denny Hamlin Foundation: The Denny Hamlin Foundation ("DHF") was created to support individuals and their families suffering from cystic fibrosis. DHF will also support chronically ill children with other debilitating illnesses. Because of Denny Hamlin's involvement as a racecar driver in NASCAR, DHF will focus primarily on raising awareness and funding for the specific needs of individuals afflicted with cystic fibrosis. As such, DHF will partner with organizations whose sole purpose is to research treatment and to provide care for individuals with cystic fibrosis. To carry out these purposes, DHF will conduct events to generate funding as well as accept contributions, grants, and gifts of money and property, and will invest the same and/or distribute to other exempt organizations described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. About Southside Speedway: Opening its gates in 1959, Southside Speedway's .333-mile oval has provided intense Friday night competition at the "Toughest Short Track in the South" and has played host to many stars of the sport, including Tommy Ellis, Bill Dennis, Lennie Pond, Butch Lindley, Sonny Hutchins and Ray Hendrick. Over the last 50 years, fans have purchased close to three million tickets to watch as many as 10,000 laps run by the feature divisions—Modified, Late Model, Grand Stock, U-Car, Street Stock and Macka Champ Karts Series. Today, the track is owned and operated by founder J.M. Wilkinson's daughters, Sue Clements and Patsy Stargardt.
