Local Favorite Hamlin Nabs Pole
Denny Hamlin will start from the pole position for the 2008 Crown Royal Presents The Dan Lowry 400. His speed of 126.198 mph (21.395 sec.) edged out Mark Martin (#8 U.S. Army Chevrolet) for the top spot for Saturday night's race "Under the Lights." Rounding out the top 5 starting positions are Martin Truex Jr. (#1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet), Patrick Carpentier (#10 LifeLock Dodge), and Reed Sorenson (#41 Target Dodge). Quotes: Denny Hamlin (#11 FedEx Express Toyota): “What a great run by this FedEx Express Toyota team. We’ll see if it holds up. With the wind blowing, I’m kind of worried that we’re going to cool this pavement off a little faster than it would normally. Either way, I think we’re going to be in the top three, and we’re definitely happy with that.” Patrick Carpentier (#10 LifeLock Dodge): “I was pushing really hard and just trying to be smooth. At Phoenix I pushed really hard and I was sideways. That’s what’s hard with these cars. You’ve got to smooth it out. I was trying to be on the limit, but just good enough. The car was great. The team did a good job and Mike (Shiplett) made some changes just before I went out and it worked perfectly. Reed Sorenson (#41 Target Dodge): “We did a lot of stuff this afternoon to improve the forward bite. Most of the things we did got the rear of the car a lot better. It’s still a little bit tight off the center of the turn. I think we’ve got the forward bite good enough for the race and on long runs we’ll be good.” Juan Pablo Montoya (#42 Texaco/Havoline Dodge): Everyone at Chip Ganassi Racing is pushing really hard. I’m actually surprised at how well I ran. In practice I struggled a little bit. We’ve been pretty quick on Fridays, but for some reason it doesn’t happen. Today, we really got a good lap. We’re pretty happy. Kasey Kahne (#9 Budweiser Dodge): “This is a fun place to qualify. I’ve always enjoyed it and especially the race. Tonight and tomorrow night should be a lot of fun.” Local favorite Elliott Sadler (#19 Stanley Dodge): “That’s a good run for us. We qualified second with this car at Phoenix. To come back here where I’m not a good qualifier, and to be maybe a top ten before it’s all over; we’re pretty happy with that.” Brian Vickers set the NASCAR Sprint Cup track qualifying record for Richmond International Raceway in May 2004 with a speed of 129.983 mph (20.772 sec.)
